Few things taste as good as your favourite coffee when you need that hit. And when you are on a ‘detox’ or a cleanse – or you just want to avoid coffee for a while (and save those pennies!) – it can feel painful if you ‘can’t have it’!

If you want to try a stimulating raw version of a shot that will give you a gorgeous raw hit of energy, taste and amazingness – you might be very interested in my recipe for a Macaccino!

We have these shots at Raw Juice Camp once in the week on our ‘coffee’ morning – to help keep the blood pumping and when everyone’s just CRAVING that morning coffee this really hits the spot!

We will most definitely have this on the menu at our Summer Retreats too!

I don’t think that coffee is evil nor do I think that all coffee shops should be torn down. I want to show that there are alternatives! I do think that it’s good to have a ‘clean shot’ of something a bit more raw and racy from time to time just to remind ourselves that coffee isn’t the only answer.

Ingredients (makes one jug serves 4-6)

  • 3 cups Almond milk
  • 1/4 cup Maca powder
  • 1/2 cup Raw Cacao Powder

Method

Make up batch of fresh almond milk (ratio in cups 1:3 or 1:4 nuts to water) always use pre soaked and drained almonds (or whatever nut). If you like it a bit sweeter add a pinch mineral salt and a couple of medjool dates.

Use store bought non-diary milk if you are not ready to make your own milks yet.

Add 3 cups of almond milk to your blender and then add cacao and maca powder. This is a STRONG blend. So you only need a small shot. So this makes a batch for sharing. Don’t let it sit in the fridge all day to settle. The flavours will destroy. Fresh ‘n’ hardcore is best. Sweeten gently with honey if you really need to but keeping it malty and bitter is best. You can always blend the powders and keep them ready in the cupboard in a jar for later to blend up in one cup portions.

You can use this ‘shot’ to add to your almond latte. You can thicken this up to make a maca shake by using more milk and adding a frozen banana. If you are not ready to make your own milk yet then use store bought – any non dairy alternative will do – but get making your own – it’s so much cheaper!
